What is GIS? Geographic Information Systems (GIS) is an integrated collection of
computer software and data used to view and manage information about geographic
places, analyze spatial relationships, and model spatial processes. A GIS provides
a framework for gathering and organizing spatial data and related information so
that it can be displayed and analyzed. For more information on how GIS works, click

The Jefferson County Geographic Information Systems Department
provides both mapping services for the county and supports the geographic information
management portion of the IT infrastructure. GIS technology is used to enhance accuracy
and efficiency in departments such as Planning and Zoning, Road and Bridge, Real
Property Appraisal and 911 Communications.
